Greater Manchester

Sleeper walls and proper groundwork.

Pressure-treated oak and pine sleepers, set into concrete and tied with steel rebar. The right way to handle a sloped garden, a stepped terrace or a raised bed that needs to last.

Every sleeper walls & retaining job, the same standard.

No corner-cutting on the substructure, no mystery on the materials, no surprise costs at the end. Here's exactly what you get when Legacy quotes for the work.

LD/01
Retaining Walls

Walls up to 1.2m built off concrete strip footings, tied with rebar through every sleeper. Will outlive the house.

LD/02
Stepped Terraces

Two- or three-tier sleeper builds for sloping gardens. Lawn on one tier, deck on another, beds or paving on the third.

LD/03
Raised Beds

Half-height sleeper boxes lined with breathable membrane. Filled with topsoil, ready to plant.

LD/04
Pine or Oak

Tanalised pine for budget and most jobs. Green oak for character — splits and silvers as it ages, which is part of the look.

LD/05
Drainage Sorted

Every retaining wall gets a French drain run behind it before backfilling. No standing water rotting the timber.

LD/06
Paired With Decking

We do most sleeper-wall jobs as part of a full back-garden build. Wall, step, deck, paving, planting — one outfit, one phone number.

Sleeper Walls & Retaining, answered.

How tall can a sleeper wall be?
Up to 1.2m without engineering sign-off. Anything taller needs a structural design — we can refer you to an engineer or design something different.
Pine or oak — which lasts longer?
Pressure-treated pine lasts 20–25 years in the ground if drainage is sorted. Green oak lasts 30+ but costs more and weathers to silver-grey, which not everyone wants.
Can you build on a steep slope?
Yes. Most of our sleeper jobs are on sloped plots. We dig a level strip footing, tie the wall back into the bank with deadmen anchors, and step the wall up the slope.
Do sleepers leak creosote?
Old reclaimed railway sleepers can. We never use those near houses or veg beds. The pressure-treated and oak sleepers we supply are safe and odour-free.
